Citywide Alarms vs. Ring

Ring makes consumer-grade cameras and doorbells that you buy off the shelf and can set up yourself. Citywide designs, installs, monitors, and services a complete camera and security system. If you are weighing a Ring camera alternative, here is how the two compare.

Key Differences

Installed for Coverage, Not Convenience

Installed for Coverage, Not Convenience

Cameras you mount yourself tend to end up where they are easiest to reach, not where coverage is needed. A Citywide technician surveys the property first, covers every entry point, sets the mounting height for clear identification, runs clean wiring, and tests every camera before leaving. That is the standard behind our professional security camera installation.

Cameras That Keep Recording When Wi-Fi Drops

Wi-Fi cameras rely on your home network to stream footage and, in many cases, to save it. Our hardwired PoE cameras connect by cable to a network video recorder, so recording does not depend on your Wi-Fi signal. They can record continuously to the recorder, hold weeks of footage, and back up to cloud storage as well. Footage can live on-site, in the cloud, or both, depending on how your system is designed, so a dropped connection need not leave a gap in the record.

Monitoring That Acts on Your Alarm

Ring’s standard monitoring is built around its alarm sensors, and watching live camera video is a separate add-on service. At Citywide, the cameras tie into 24/7 monitoring through our home alarm systems, and when your alarm trips, the monitoring station can send your alarm video to police.

One System Instead of Separate Devices

Ring sells cameras, doorbells, and its alarm as separate products, each added to the Ring app as you buy it. A Citywide system is designed as one from the start: cameras, alarm, sensors, doorbell, locks, lights, and garage are planned together and run from a single app. Through our smart home tools, you can arm the system from your phone, open the garage remotely, and schedule the thermostat and lights without leaving it.

Home and Business Under One Company

Ring’s business monitoring covers intrusion, panic, and duress, and its own site states that smoke and carbon monoxide monitoring is not available at commercial addresses. Citywide covers both sides of the job. For your home, that means alarms, cameras, and smart home. For your business, it means business security, access control, and commercial fire systems, along with medical alert systems and 3M security window film.

Making the Switch from Ring

Ring devices run on Ring’s own app and service, so they generally can’t join another company’s system. Switching means starting fresh with a design built for your property, and that is where we begin. A Citywide technician walks the property, designs the camera coverage and the rest of the system, and installs it, with the cameras, alarm, and monitoring planned together from the first visit. Switch whenever you are ready.
